Home maintenance jobs that could save you thousands

April 22, 2020

As we have all found ourselves with a little extra time around the home, it could be a great time to start that home maintenance ‘To-do’ list you’ve been putting off. Here’s our top 7 home maintenance tips (you may not have thought of) that could save you thousands down the track.

  1. Check for nesting pests that can chew through wires and destroy wood.
No one likes to find a family of rats or termites that have been living rent free in your home for who knows how long. Not only are they icky, they can do serious damage to your home if untreated. To avoid this nasty surprise, clean out and disinfect your cupboards (removing all food particles), patch up any holes or cracks where they can enter, and make sure you sweep up dead leaves from around the outside of your house.
  2. Avoid water damage
With winter fast approaching, it’s important to make sure your gutters are working properly, and your roof is leak free to avoid damage to the foundations of your home. Clean out your gutters and check for loose tiles. Next time it rains, check if the gutters drained properly and isolate any issues to be fixed.
  3. Maintain your fridge
Your fridge, even if it’s considered energy efficient, can rack up your electricity costs through wasted energy if it’s not maintained correctly. It will also shorten the life of your fridge (even more important now if you were guilty of a panic-buy!) There are two ways you can keep your fridge in check:

    Keeping the coils clean:
the coils at the back or bottom of your fridge keep it cold by pulling warmth out of the fridge. If they’re not clean, they don’t exchange heat and cold as efficiently. To clean them, turn your fridge off and unplug it, and use the crevice tool on you vacuum cleaner to clean the coils.Checking the fridge door seal: If your fridge door doesn’t seal properly, energy (and money) is lost out the door, so it’s important to check it’s intact. To do this, get a $5 note and put it in the door and shut it. Now try slide the note out, is it difficult or easy? If it’s easy, the seal needs replacing.
  4. Clean your air conditioner filters
Majority of energy used at home is for heating and cooling. Cleaning out your filters allows for better circulation of air, making the whole system more efficient. Check the user manual to find out the best way to clean your filters.
  5. Test your smoke alarm
A working smoke alarm is a very important for your family and your property’s protection. To test your smoke alarm is working, hold down the test button until you hear a loud alert tone, then release.
  6. Clean your dryer vent
Noticed your dryer is taking longer to dry your clothes or your clothing has an odour? It might be time to clean out your dryer vent. To do this, unplug the dryer, disconnect the vent from the back and clean out excess lint.
  7. Repair garden fencing
If you have iron fencing and the paint begins to chip, it’s important to repaint and seal the fence before rust gets in and does some real damage. The harsh sun and rain can also accelerate the wear of wood fencing, so it’s a good idea to use a fence stain to revive and protect it.

It’s all the little things that make a big difference. COVID-19 may be keeping us at home but it doesn’t mean we can’t be productive. We hope these home maintenance jobs help you save money and keep you and your family safe around the home.
